August Awareness Days: Photography Marketing Prompts
If you struggle to know what to write about on your photography blog or on your social media channels, then have you considered using national awareness days as content prompts? If not, I highly recommend it!
There’s nothing worse than staring at a blank screen, knowing that you need to create content to promote your photography, but not having a clue what to write. Right?!
This is when awareness days can prove so valuable. There are many hundreds of awareness days happening each and every year and one hundred or more each month. So, that’s hundreds of potential topics that you could piggyback on as a content idea!

Awareness days are invaluable content prompts
An awareness day, based on a particular theme or topic, could be all you need to come up with hundreds of photography marketing content ideas throughout the year.
Used literally as prompts, you might find that the theme of a particular awareness day, awareness week or monthly awareness campaign inspires you and sets the cogs in your brain turning. You might go on to recall a story worth sharing with your audience on that theme or topic, or you may conjure up a memory of an experience that might interest them, for example.
Simply because of the variety of awareness days that are happening each calendar month, I’m confident that if you applied yourself and open your mind to the possibilities of how awareness days might be helpful to you, you’ll be able to make them work for your photography business.

Ideas of how you could use these Awareness days in August
Now let’s look at some ways that you could intepret these events, days and themes to your photography marketing content:
Monthly Awareness Days in August
World Breastfeeding Month
If you specialise in newborn, maternity or family photography, share a breastfeeding image (with your client’s permission), tell the story behind a session, or offer advice on creating a relaxed, supportive environment for feeding during newborn photoshoots.
Romance Awareness Month
This is a natural fit for wedding, engagement, couples and lifestyle photographers. Share romantic portraits, suggest date-night photo ideas, talk about the importance of capturing everyday moments together, or showcase a favourite love story from a recent shoot.
National Fishing Month
Outdoor, wildlife, landscape and family photographers could use this as an opportunity to share photographs taken around lakes, rivers or the coast, offer tips for photographing fishing activities, or tell the story behind an image captured while enjoying time in nature.
4th August
Sisters Day
Family portrait photographers, Sisters Day is a great opportunity for you! You could share examples of portraits you have captured of female siblings together, and talk about their unique bond that was apparent during the shoot. Similarly, if you’re a pet photographer, and you have photographed two sibling pets, what a perfect opportunity to talk about that!
Alternatively, you might like to make this more personal and share your own story, anecdote, or personal experience as a sister. Perhaps you have a super strong bond with your own sister, or maybe you never got on as kids but you now work together harmoniously?!
Remember, that we can build a sense of connection through our marketing content when we open up and share information about ourselves and our personal lives. So, don’t be afraid of revealing a little about yourself in your content as well.
There’s also Son and Daughter Day on the 11th of August – why not share some sibling portraits on this day too, or perhaps even run a special mini shoot especially to mark the occasion? Parents love having portraits of their children together!
10th August
World Lion Day
This is an obvious one for the wildlife photographers among you, as is Elephant Day on the 12th of August, and International Orangutan Day on the 19th of August.
If lions, elephants or orangutans are species of wildlife that you have had the pleasure of capturing in photographs, whether in your work or during a holiday to the country – then these occasions would be the perfect opportunity to share them. Perhaps you can share a story about how the photograph came about, or provide some detail about the setting or circumstance – what happened before and after the shot was taken, for example?
It would also be a great opportunity to talk about any conservation initiatives you support or to highlight some interesting information about these incredible animals that your audience might appreciate. Perhaps there are even some Instagram accounts of photographers that you could recommend your audience follow if they appreciate wildlife photography.
15th August
World Relaxation Day
What do you do to relax? This is a day to talk about relaxation, so why not share an insight into your world by sharing what you love to do in your downtime, or talk about a place where you feel most relaxed?
19th August
World Photography Day
This is one that all photographers could use! Why did you become a photographer? What type of photography do you specialise in, and why is that? Who/what do you love photographing?
All this, and much more, you could share with your audience on World Photography Day. What is it that you will choose to share?
Think Beyond the Awareness Day
Found something here that you’d like to use? Great! But, don’t feel you have to post just on the awareness day itself.
Pitch a story linked to a newsletter at least several weeks before the awareness day date. Publish a blog a week beforehand, share behind-the-scenes content leading up to the date, send a newsletter on the morning of the awareness day, then repurpose the content into social posts afterwards.
One awareness day can easily generate a week’s worth of marketing content.
August awareness days can inspire tons of content
I hope that this may have helped to show you how you can use some of the August awareness days in your marketing content this year. Of course, these are just some ideas I’ve put together and shared just to give you some quick-fire inspiration on how to apply them to your content.
Don’t overthink this!
Remember, there are many more awareness days in August than those listed above. Cherry-pick a few of the August awareness days that speak to you. As I’ve shown in the examples I’ve shared here, you can interpret them however you wish!
