Beyond Instagram: How to Get Noticed as a Photographer
I recently had the pleasure of being interviewed by landscape photographer Matt Payne, on his photography podcast, ‘F-Stop, Collaborate and Listen’.
We talked about how photography professionals can use media publicity, SEO and blogging strategically in their marketing to get noticed and to grow their businesses.
If you’ve ever wondered how to get your work seen by more of the right people, how to appear in your dream publications, or how to make your website do more of the heavy lifting when it comes to attracting clients, this episode is for you.
Listen to the interview here or watch on YouTube.
Why visibility matters (even if you’re already booked up)
As I said to Matt, many photographers I speak to are focused on honing their craft, keeping up with editing, and serving clients, and rightly so. But the reality is, even the most talented photographers can struggle to stand out and get noticed in a saturated market, so making time for marketing is vital.
That’s where visibility marketing comes in. It’s not about shouting louder, but about showing up in the right places, whether that’s on Google, in a trusted magazine, or through the words you share on your own blog.
It’s important to recognise that marketing is not just limited to Instagram. There are a whole host of marketing strategies that you can use to get the word out about the great work that you are doing, to build a profile and to help you get noticed as a photographer by your ideal clients.

Beyond Instagram: Why photographers should embrace PR, blogging and SEO
In this in-depth interview, I talk about how PR, search engine optimisation, and blogging.
Effective separately, but even more so when working seamlessly together, these marketing strategies can help photographers like you to build visibility, credibility, trust, and long-term brand recognition.
What we covered in the episode
Among many things, Matt and I discussed the common marketing challenges photographers face and how to overcome them, including:
- The power of media coverage to position you as a go-to expert and attract more aligned clients
- How to avoid the most common PR mistakes (and what to do instead)
- What SEO really means for photographers in 2025 and why even small tweaks can have a big impact
- Why photography blogging is far from dead, and how to use it to tell compelling stories, answer client questions, and improve your search rankings.
I also shared examples of how photographers I’ve worked with have used these strategies successfully to secure press coverage, grow their web traffic, and attract more bookings without relying solely on social media or expensive ads.
Plus, I highlighted that this is entirely possible for photographers, whether they are long-established or just starting out in business or in a new photography niche. Award-winning images are NOT a prerequisite for media coverage!
If you only take one thing away…
The point I was keen to make in the interview on the F-Stop Collaborate and Listen podcast is this…
You already have what you need to market your business — your expertise, your story, and your images – but you need to take the time to present it in the right way and put it in front of the right people who can help you reach more of your ideal clients.
In my view, a combination of proactive PR, strategic blog content and SEO strategies are are the ultimate dream team when it comes to visibility for photographers. That’s why they are at the heart of my group mentoring programme, The Photographer’s Visibility Blueprint.
