British Institute of Professional Photography Magazine: Inspiring Photographers to Pitch to the Media
I’m thrilled to share that I’ve once again been featured as a guest expert in the PHOTO-GRAPHER, the official magazine of the British Institute of Professional Photography (BIPP).
In this latest issue, I contributed a four-page guest expert article all about PR for photographers. Specifically, on why and how photographers can pitch to the media and build greater visibility.
It’s a topic close to my heart. For over a decade, I’ve been helping photographers raise their profiles and attract dream clients through strategic PR, content marketing, and SEO copywriting.
So, to be invited to contribute again to the BIPP magazine and inspire professional photographers to take a more proactive approach to their publicity, is a huge honour.

Why PR Matters for Photographers
Many photographers still think PR is reserved for celebrities, big brands, or global campaigns. But in reality, PR is one of the most powerful visibility tools available to independent photographers.
PR is about more than press coverage.
It’s about:
- Positioning yourself as an expert and authority in your niche
- Building credibility and trust with your audience
- Attracting new opportunities and collaborations
- Driving more traffic to your website through backlinks and brand awareness
As I explained in the article, photographers already have what journalists are looking for: compelling visual stories, specialist knowledge, and unique perspectives.
The missing piece is often confidence and know-how, and a lack of understanding about what to pitch and how to pitch to the media in a way that appeals to editors and publications.
Encouraging Photographers to Pitch to the Media
In my four-page article, I share practical insights on:
- What makes a story newsworthy in the photography world
- How to identify relevant media outlets to approach
- How to craft a professional and compelling pitch
- What to expect when your work is featured in the media
I also encourage photographers to start small, by pitching to local media, niche photography blogs, or trade publications initially, before approaching larger national outlets. Every feature, no matter how small, builds visibility, credibility, and momentum.

Visibility Beyond Social Media
One of the themes I often talk about, and that I discussed in the article, is the risk of relying solely on social media for marketing.
From experience, I know that the majority of photographers have a tendancy to prioritise social media content above PR, yet this is an alternative and highly-impactful form of marketing. It’s a massive missed opportunity!
Social media algorithms change, visibility on these platforms is not guaranteed, and your reach can vanish overnight.
PR, on the other hand, helps photographers:
- Reach new audiences outside their existing following
- Build third-party validation through editorial coverage
- Create long-term discoverability through digital publications that continue to drive traffic long after they’re published
A single press feature can not only raise your profile but also enhance your SEO, giving you both immediate visibility and long-term benefits.

Thank You to the British Institute of Professional Photography
A huge thank you must go to editor Joel Hansen and the team at the British Institute of Professional Photography for once again inviting me to contribute to the PHOTO-GRAPHER.
The BIPP continues to do an incredible job championing professional photographers across the UK and beyond, and I’m proud to play a small part in inspiring photographers to see the potential of PR as a growth strategy.
