Interview with Alex Vita About Publicity For Photographers
I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Alex Vita of Foreground Web for an in-depth conversation about media publicity for photographers, and the vital role that public relations (PR) plays in photography marketing.
The full interview is now live, and I’m excited to share it with you! Watch it, in full, over on Alex’s YouTube channel here (or click on the video below).
During the interview, Alex and I explored how strategic publicity can help photographers elevate their visibility, strengthen their brand, and ultimately grow their businesses.
If you’re looking to attract more photography clients without relying on the same old marketing tactics, this interview offers valuable insights into how media publicity can help you take your photography business to the next level.
Meet Alex Vita: The Interview Host
If you’re already familiar with Alex’s work, you know that he’s a top-tier website designer. Like me, he works exclusively with professional photographers, and he’s renowned for creating bespoke photography websites that don’t just look great but also attract clients.
Alex supports photographers in two key ways:
- He builds custom photography websites: With over a decade of experience and 300+ websites designed for photographers across 25 countries, Alex is a go-to expert in the field.
- He also educates photographers on how to improve their online presence: Through website audits, one-on-one consulting, and educational content, Alex helps photographers level up their digital marketing.
Being invited by someone as respected as Alex to share my passion for PR and publicity with his audience was a real honour.
PR in the Photography Marketing Mix
One of the first things we covered in our chat was the distinction between PR and other marketing methods. I explained where PR fits into the broader marketing mix and how media publicity is a key part of that.
I also shared that media publicity is highly impactful yet is often underutilised by photographers. And, I dispelled the myth that it’s just for those who have already “made it”.
Publicity Opportunities for all photographers!
I explained that media publicity is within reach, and can be incredibly beneficial, for photographers at any stage of their career. It’s not just for celebrity photographers or those winning highly coveted photography awards.
It can also be used effectively by photographers who are just starting in business, and who want to build awareness of their new photography venture or drive footfall to their photography studio.
Wherever you are in your photography journey, there are publicity opportunities out there that you can take advantage of!
Media Publicity for Photographers
During the conversation, Alex rightly pointed out that, unlike Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), which takes time to build momentum, PR can offer faster results. And, I agree.
Media publicity can deliver quick wins by generating buzz and increasing visibility. Photographers with something newsworthy and exciting to share could find themselves featured in the press within hours or days – secure the interest of a journalist and watch the press coverage roll in!
However, I did stress the importance of building media relationships over time, as I don’t wish to give a false sense of hope about what’s achievable. While PR and media relations work can provide immediate results, it’s also a strategy that should be implemented in the longer term to maximise results.
PR Tips for Photographers
During our almost hour-long chat, Alex and I also discussed the following:
- The Importance of Business Positioning: Understanding how you’re perceived in the market is key to creating effective PR campaigns.
- Common PR Mistakes: I shared some of the most frequent pitfalls photographers face and how to avoid them.
- The Power of Storytelling: Storytelling in PR helps create emotional connections with your audience, amplifying the impact of your publicity efforts.
- The Intersection of SEO and PR: How combining PR with SEO can significantly boost your results.
- Leveraging Social Media: We also touched on how social media can complement your PR efforts and help build a strong online presence.
